After a slow start, Supreme Basketball is closing out the summer AAU season strong

Coach Vincent Campbell looks on as his team, Supreme Basketball, takes the floor.

After a slow start to the travel hoops season, Supreme Basketball, a seventh-grade AAU team, is closing out the summer with a strong finish.
Coach Vincent Campbell and his team of 12 Staten Islanders (formerly the S.I. Musketeers), got off to a 1-5 start to the season, but have since rebounded with a pair of key triumphs over the weekend en route to capturing the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy tournament crown in South Orange, N.J. on Saturday.
SB topped the Queens Defenders, 47-22, in their opening contest before downing Monster Basketball, 35-24, in the final.
To make the victories all the more impressive, Supreme was missing five of its players, including four starters.
“They’re learning what it takes to work hard,” said Coach Campbell. “I’m so proud of the way they picked it up this weekend.
“They just came and did their best,” he added. “They don’t back down, give up, or quit.”
Supreme practiced as a team for the first time in mid-July, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and played its first game just three weeks ago -- affording them little time to prepare for the season.
“We haven’t had much of a chance to practice,” said Campbell. “We weren’t doing so good, we lost against some elite teams, but we were able to get two wins and a championship in our division.”
Campbell credited the play of Amari Green, who tallied 40 points over Saturday’s two contests, as well as fellow guards Michael Warner and Santos Plamenco.
“[Amari] came off the bench and showed what he can do,” said Campbell. “[Warner and Plamenco] are two of the shortest guys on the team, but they’re quick and fearless.”
Campbell looks to big men Fadhil Baruwa and Koren Gavish in the post, as well as Jace McBean and Hassan Jaber off the bench.
“The team is starting to step up and come together,” said Campbell. “I expect to see better production through the rest of this season and see what they can do.”
Supreme Basketball will hit the blacktop for four more games this weekend, though the venue is TBA.
